PostSubject: Jets' Otah fails physical    Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:04 pm

Last week, the New York Jets made a no-risk attempt to shore up the right side of their offensive line by trading a conditional 7th round draft pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for former first round right tackle Jeff Otah.

The condition of that draft pick, however, was that the lineman be able to pass a physical within a week of the trade. Today was that day, and it came and went without a successful physical.

The bottom line is that Otah will now be going back to the Panthers and the Jets will be out nothing, with the draft pick reverting back to them.

Despite being a talented athlete—there is a reason that the Panthers traded up in the first round to draft him a mere four years ago—Otah’s professional career has been plagued by knee injuries.

A starter in his first professional game, Otah started 12 games as a rookie, but missed 3 due to injury. He has been limited to only four games total in the last two full seasons. What might have seemed a surprisingly low price for a former first round pick that is a mere 26 years old—a 7th round conditional draft pick—now makes a lot more sense.
