NFL considering in-season change of challenge rule

We wrote earlier Friday about the possibility the NFL will overturn the rule that prevents officials from reviewing plays if an absent-minded coach tosses his challenge flag on a scoring play or a turnover.

You know, The Jim Schwartz Rule.

SI.com's Peter King reported Thursday that the NFL is "very likely" to overturn the rule, and now we're learning it might happen sooner rather than later.

ESPN's Ed Werder reported Friday that Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said the league's competition committee will meet to discuss the replay rule in the "next few days." If a change is made, it could be in-season, but the competition committee would have to recommend it to league ownership.

Silly rule that SHOULD be changed. It shouldn't matter if a coach brain farts and throws a challenge flag on a touchdown. You should still be able to penalize him 15 yards, but the play should still be automatically reviewed. Why should an illegal challenge negate that? It isn't affected in any way whatsoever.

I don't think there should be a 15 yard penalty for it either. Why have rules about when coaches can and can't throw the flag. Whether the play is reviewable or not, and it's not about showing up the refs. If you don't want the refs shown up, then hire them full time, train them completely in the rules of your new pansy league and move on.
