He'll be back next year but, no way does his 5th year option get picked up.

One of many 1st round bust in the 2013 draft. Awful draft class for pass rushers.

Desmond Trufant would have been nice though. Kyle Long also.

Yes, hindsight what it is.  I thought that pick was a bit high for Trufant, but I was leaning to Matt Elam, so what the hell do I know?

I wanted Cordarrelle Patterson, thought he was a future star

He might have been with Ben. Mike Wallace was a star in the burgh, but sucks in Minneapolis.

Who's a bigger bust, Jones or Jadeveon Clowney?

Clowney started 9 games this year and has 4.5 sacks. As a pass rusher, he is a bigger success than Jones, IMO. Especially coming off the injury from last year.

But you also have to factor in the hype that JC had coming in as the #1 pick. I give Jones the edge too but not by much.

Paul Guenther calls Joey Porter an “embarrassment” to coaching

Posted by Josh Alper on January 11, 2016

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis spent a portion of his Monday press conference talking about the need for his team to “control us and not worry about the other team or other circumstances” in light of the way things played out at the end of their 18-16 loss to the Steelers on Saturday.

Others on the team are still thinking about Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter being on the field and exchanging unpleasantries with Bengals players after Vontaze Burfict was penalized for a blow to Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown’s head in the fourth quarter, however. Tackle Andrew Whitworth said Monday that he doesn’t respect Porter and called his unprofessionalism “ridiculous.” Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther also took aim at Porter’s behavior.

“Porter [is] an embarrassment to the coaching profession,” Guenther said, via Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Guenther said that he spoke to Porter before the game and asked him not to engage with any Bengals players after Porter got into it with them multiple times during the ugly regular season game between the two teams that resulted in more than $130,000 in fines from the league. Porter is reportedly set to receive a well-deserved fine for his actions on Saturday night and his presence on the field should also be addressed with an officiating crew that should never have let him cross the sideline in the first place.

And what about the four Cincy coaches that were on the field too. Jones didn't have to say anything to Porter and frankly Porter was probably rightfully pissed off that Burfict took out another key member of the Steelers offense. Guenther should also talk to his player Burfict who likes to spit on people and do cheap shots if he wants to talk about embarrassments.

Mike Tomlin On Jarvis Jones: 'His Arrow's Pointed Up'

Over the course of the next few months, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to
decide whether or not to pick up the fifth-year (2017 season) option.

While Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wasn't asked that particular question about Jones on Wednesday during his end of the season press conference...

I think Jarvis Jones proved this year that he's not a bust. Certainly not worth the first round pick, but he's become a serviceable starter.

His play improved near the end of the season, saw he can sort of cover a receiver if necessary too. Not really a bust, but as PhamtomJB93 said... not worth that round one pick

At the time he was drafted he certainly merited a 1sy round pick. Shame he never reached his potential.

Jones has proven he is a backup or rotational player only. Still need to find somebody at OLB who can pressure the passer.

Mike Tomlin once referred to Woodley as Robin, to James Harrison being Batman. If that is the case, then Jarvis Jones is still Alfred the butler.

JamesinNYC: I like Jarvis Jones, but I don't love him. Should the Steelers try to sign him to an extension without picking up his 5th year option, which in my opinion basically says we love you?

Ed Bouchette: That is going to be a tough one. Yes, I think they should try to sign him to an extension first, but I don't see them coming to terms and then I don't see them picking up his bonus. So, it's on to 2016 to see what happens.

Here's an interesting article on Jones and what it would mean to pick up his option. Sounds like the Steelers can cancel the option after the 2016 season with very little financial repercussions.

Trib Live - Joe Starkey wrote:
This offseason, the Steelers must decide whether to make an initial commitment to the fifth-year option — the 2017 season — on Jones' contract.

The option will be worth more than $8 million, which sounds daunting, but here's the thing: It's pretty much the equivalent of a high-school athlete's “verbal commitment” to a college. The Steelers can nix it, without financial repercussions, after the 2016 season (more proof that incoming players were the biggest losers in the last CBA negotiations).

So it's really not a difficult decision at all. Pick up the option, see if Jones performs in 2016 and then decide on his future.

Rob: It appeared Jarvis Jones made progress this year. Where do you see his ceiling?

Gerry Dulac: Not only do I agree, the coaches agree. I don't know how high a ceiling he has, but I do know he is getting better. I think he showed that in the postseason. And he's pretty good in coverage, too, something James Harrison doesn't do so well at age 38

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2016/02/03/Gerry-Dulac-s-Steelers-chat-transcript-2-3-16/stories/201602030197

Touchdown Joey: The learning curve at OLB seems to be quite steep. James Harrison, Worilds, Jarvis are all guys who took 3-4 years to look remotely good at the position. Dupree showed a lot more as a rookie than any of them did. Does that mean his upside in years 2, 3, 4 is sky high?

Gerry Dulac: Sky high might be a little hyperbolic, but there's no questions his arrow points up -- way up.

Pittsburgh Steelers: 2015 Disappointing player of the year

February 12, 2016 by Erick Starkey

The Pittsburgh Steelers had their fair share of successes last year, ending the season with a 10-6 record. They also made it to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champions. That being said, Pittsburgh did have a few disappointments this past season. Most of the Steelers’ disappointments were injuries to key players, but they did have some players who underperformed throughout the season. Here is a look at which Steeler needs to improve for the 2016 season so they can meet the teams expectations for them.

Jarvis Jones, OLB

Jones was Pittsburgh’s first-round draft pick in 2013, and he has not shown much in his three years in the league. During his first two years, he was able to play in only 21 games, racking up 58 tackles and only three sacks. He battled injury in the first two years of his career, and he could never really get going in either season. After his first two seasons, he proved to not be worthy of his 17th overall selection, but Pittsburgh hoped that 2015 would be his breakout year.

This past season proved to be no different for Jones. He did suit up for 15 games, but his production was limited. He started for most of the season, but he could only rack up 29 tackles, which was fewer than he had in 2013, a season in which he played in 14 games. He was able to get two sacks, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and an interception. If you take out the roles that he played in turnovers, Jones would have had an incredibly disappointing season. He just could not get to the ball fast enough to make the play.

The only silver lining to Jones’ resume this past year was the fact that he did not shy away in the playoffs. In two postseason games, he had four and five tackles, to go along with a forced fumble and a sack. Jones showed that he can perform well at a high level in the postseason, but he was so inconsistent for the rest of the year. Jones was able to account for five tackles only twice during the regular season. He has yet to show that he was worth the first-round pick, and if he does not perform well in 2016, he may be a complete bust.

Honorable Mentions

Josh Scobee, K

Scobee was such a big disappointment, that he did not last more than four games. He was brought in at the beginning of the season after injuries to Shaun Suisham and Garrett Hartley, but he did not pan out. In only four games, Scobee missed four of his 10 field goals and one of his extra point attempts. He did miss two key field goals in a loss the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4, and then he was released by the Steelers.

Jacoby Jones, KR

Special teams was not really a bright spot for Pittsburgh last season, as they had trouble returning kicks too. Jones was brought in by the Steelers in the middle of the season to be a threat returning kicks, but he was not able to perform. From 2012-14, he proved to be a great returner for the Ravens, and the Steelers were hoping to get that spark when they brought him in, but he struggled. He played for Pittsburgh for four games, returning only nine kickoffs for an average of 24.4 yards, along with a 3-yard return average on his six punt returns. The dagger for Jones was his inability to hold onto the ball. He had three fumbles in just four games, and he had two of those in the same game, which turned out to be his last with the Steelers.

I think Joey Porter has become the scapegoat. It's time for SX to shut up about Jarvis Jones on Porter's behalf.

Jarvis Jones was serviceable, but for a 1st round pick you want better than serviceable
