Sorting the Sunday Pile: Patriots*** offense coming out hotter than 2007
By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
September 21, 2015 12:25 am ET

The last time the New England Patriots*** went into a season after being haunted by a scandal was 2007. They set the NFL on fire with record-setting numbers, going General Sherman on opponents en route to scoring 36.8 points per game and averaging 411.3 yards per game.

Don't tell anyone, but this year's Patriots* are out to a similar -- if not hotter -- start.

There was some sort notion the Pats*** couldn't recreate the vitriol-filled, borderline-villainous production of 2007. No Randy Moss. No Wes Welker. Tom Brady is older. Question marks on the offensive line.

Not the case at all:

Patriots*** HOT STARTS
TEAM POINTS/GAME NET YARDS/GAME BRADY PASS YARDS/GAME BRADY TD/INT
2007 Pats*** 38 419 280 6/1
2015 Pats*** 34 434 377 7/0

Honestly I had to quadruple check these numbers because it doesn't seem possible the Patriots*** could be pacing themselves along with the 2007 monster squad two games in.

But consider a) their defense isn't as good this year, b) new passing rules help increase offensive production and c) they're just as mad at everyone, with Tom Brady being even more incensed about his reputation being impugned through the Deflategate process.

The result's been a laser-locked focus for the Patriots*** quarterback. Brady's averaging 8.3 yards per attempt and completing 69.2 percent of his passes (2007, because you want to know: 9.8 YPA, 79.6%).

Rob Gronkowski is completely healthy and Brady's dialed in on him, targeting King Kong's worst nightmare 21 times in two games, completing 12 passes to in Gronk's direction for 207 yards and four touchdowns.

It's possible -- likely? -- the production doesn't slow down. With a defense incapable of shutting teams down completely, the Patriots*** are likely to be throwing later in games. The next three of those on the schedule? The Jaguars, Cowboys and Colts. Buckle up.

New England's run game isn't clicking completely and the defense has issues. But there's plenty of season left to figure those things out. For now the Patriots*** can make like ‘07 and let Brady and the offense carry them.

so what you're saying is the Patriots***** have found a new way to cheat without being caught (yet), upon which the commissioner will not be able to punish owner, coach, or players involved because they'll take him to court and win - against all odds.

Do you know what the Patriots*' 2007 season was good for? Supplying children in Nicaragua with some new shirts.

The Steelers are averaging 32 ppg without Bryant and Bell.

Once those two get back, it won't be even be close about who has the best offense in the league.

The writer makes a good point. I don't see any D in the NFL able to shut down the Patriots**. They are only going to be better as the season rolls on. Perhaps the Legion of Boom in their prime, but they are far from that this year.

If the Steelers play in Jan vs. the Patriots*, it is going to be an offensive shootout. The question would be is who can make the most D stops?

Maybe everyone in the AFC is playing down to them so they don't get any real competitive information to go on down the stretch? Make them overconfident?

Tapes: 34 ppg
Steelers: 32 ppg... without Bryant & Bell

If there's an unstoppable offense in the league, it's Pittsburgh's.

Somebody sure loves the taste of Brady's deflated balls.

I don't see anything wrong with a coach enthousiastically cheering for an opponent.

Tomlin was just trying to help Jones stay in bounds. That's good sportsmanship.

You got it buddy. They now have state of the art equipment that can't be detected mainly because the league is to scared to look for it. I guess they've had enough egg on their faces.
