Playoff picture after Week 13

Where do the Steelers stand after Week 13 of the NFL season?

If there is one thing Steelers players know, it is that they can’t depend on other teams when it comes to the playoff hunt. They have to get the job done themselves.

They did just that on Sunday night, staying in the playoff hunt with a resounding 45-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts at Heinz Field to improve their record to 7-5.

It was a much-needed win in the tight AFC playoff race, but it still doesn’t put the Steelers in the position they want to be in. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Steelers would still be on the outside looking in. The Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, the two teams holding the wild card spots, both have the same 7-5 record as the Steelers, but have better conference records.

There are still four games to go though, and there is no doubt things are going to heat up.

The Steelers remaining schedule includes hitting the road this Sunday against the AFC North division leading Cincinnati Bengals (10-2) and then back home the following week against Denver (10-2), The Steelers close out the regular season on the road against the Baltimore Ravens (4-8) and Cleveland Browns (2-10).

The other teams in the wild card race have the following schedule remaining:

Kansas City:   San Diego (3-9), at Baltimore (4-8), Cleveland (2-10), Oakland (5-7)
New York Jets:   Tennessee (3-9), at Dallas (3-8), New England (10-2), at Buffalo (6-6)
Houston:   New England (10-2), at Indianapolis (6-6), at Tennessee (3-9), Jacksonville (4-8)
Buffalo Bills: at Philadelphia (5-7), at Washington (5-6), Dallas (3-8), New York Jets (7-5)

Here is a look at the playoff picture.

AFC Standings:

Division Leaders

Cincinnati Bengals – 10-2 – North
Denver Broncos – 10-2  - West
New England Patriots** – 10-2 – East
Indianapolis Colts – 6-6 - South

Wild Card

Kansas City Chiefs – 7-5
New York Jets – 7-5

In the Hunt

Pittsburgh Steelers – 7-5
Buffalo Bills – 6-6
Houston Texans – 6-6

Our schedule sucks compared to what these other teams have left. Kansas City has a cake schedule to close out their season. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to win every single one of those games. The Jets have a very winnable schedule as well. Buffalo and New England will be their toughest tests. We absolutely need to win out, and with our next two games being against Cincinatti, and Denver it's going to be a slug-fest. The Steelers have to be on their A game. None of the blunders and mistakes we saw against the likes of the Seahawks. We need an all out team effort if we want to make the playoffs.

It's very simple. Win out and we're in. Can't do that, they don't deserve a playoff spot.

Not surprising here. We've been in this position the majority of the last 5 yrs - one foot in the proverbial playoff grave, one foot out.

I regard Jets hosting New England no less difficult than Steelers hosting Denver - Pats* will still be playing for a bye and Gronk should be back by then

And I am not worried about the Bills tanking the last game if they have been eliminated - Rex would love to knock the Jets out of the playoffs

FWIW Five Thirty Eight calculates the Bills are more likely to make the playoffs than the Jets - Steelers projected with 54% chance of making playoffs behind Chiefs with 85% probability of making playoffs among wildcard contenders

Steelers win a tiebreaker with the Jets if both win out

If the Chiefs, Jets and Steelers all finish 11-5, the Chiefs would be the No. 5 seed because they owned the best conference record at 10-2. The Steelers and Jets would both finish with 8-4 conference records.

It then goes to common games. The Steelers would win the final wild card because they would have a 4-1 record against Cleveland, Indianapolis, Oakland and New England while the Jets would be 3-2 against those teams.

However, if the Jets and Steelers both finish 10-6 and the Jets’ loss comes against the Cowboys the Jets would get in based on better conference record. In that scenario, the Jets would finish 8-4 in conference games and the Steelers would finish 7-5.

http://sportsblogs.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers-steelers-blog/2015/12/07/Steelers-in-playoffs-if-they-win-out

If the Jets and Steelers both lose 1 game it appears the one to have the Jets lose for tiebreaker purposes is New England

I think we can afford one more loss. That loss could very well come in the next two games. If we finish 10-6 we should be in the playoffs, I don't think the jets are as good as their record.

I'm most worried about Denver of the last four games. However, I do think we can and will win out.

I would be a lot more worried about playing Denver if we were traveling TO Denver, but with the home field momentum and energy we've had with the last few games there, I feel more comfortable about facing them.

On the flip side, I don't feel nervous at all about playing the Bengals in Cinci. Bring it on, they are going down this time.

Yeah cinci doesnt scare me much. They may have beat us once but that was the game they took Bell out of. Now its our turn to embarrass them in front of their home crowd. Its going to be a tough physical game. It's almost like the steelers - ravens rivalry has turned into a steelers -Bengals rivalry. Always a very physical game. I wanna come out healthy and with a win going into a huge home game against Denver. God I love this time of the season especially when Pitt is in the mix.

That's exactly what I was thinking during that Bengals game. The tougher, clash-filled rivalry is becoming Steelers vs Bengals, since the Ravens have fallen so far.

Steelers upset Bengals but gain no ground in AFC wild-card race

By Shalise Manza Young
Shutdown Corner

The good news for the fighting-for-a-wild-card berth Pittsburgh Steelers: they did their job on Sunday, beating the Cincinnati Bengals, 33-20.

The bad news for the Steelers: the two teams who came into Sunday holding onto the two AFC wild-card berths, the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets, also did their job on Sunday, so Pittsburgh wasn't able to displace either one.

Ben Roethlisberger was a stellar 30-for-39 for 282 yards, but did not throw a touchdown. Instead, the scoring was done by running back DeAngelo Williams (two touchdowns), cornerback William Gay (his sixth career pick-six), and kicker Chris Boswell, who converted field goals of 42, 47, 45 and 31 yards.

Pittsburgh is now 8-5. But the Chiefs won a low-scoring affair over the Chargers, 10-3, and the Jets beat the Titans, 30-8, so those clubs are also 8-5 and remain ahead of the Steelers in the AFC standings because of tiebreakers.

The win was Mike Tomlin's 90th victory as head coach of the Steelers, and insures that his team will again be .500 or better, as it has been every season he's been in charge. Under Tomlin, the Steelers are 13-5 against the Bengals.

Cincinnati fans may argue that Pittsburgh's win comes with a "but", and that but is the hand injury Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton suffered on his team's first possession. Dalton was intercepted by Stephon Tuitt on a screen attempt, and knocked himself out for the day when he broke a bone in his hand trying to tackle Tuitt.

Dalton confirmed the injury after the game, and said he will see a hand specialist on Monday. Coach Marvin Lewis said Dalton definitely will not play next week against the 49ers, but would not speculate beyond that.

AJ McCarron, in his second year, finished the game when Dalton exited. McCarron was 22-for-32 for 280 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions, one of them returned for 6 by Gay.

Pittsburgh finishes the regular season at home against AFC West-leading Denver next week, then at Baltimore and at Cleveland; the Ravens and Browns are a combined 7-19.

The Chiefs will have a similarly favorable closing stretch, traveling to Baltimore then hosting the Browns and Raiders; the Jets' final three games are more difficult, as they travel to Dallas, host the Patriots** and wrap in Buffalo.

So what's the deal with tiebreaker stuff with the jets.....on Mike and Mike they were saying if we both win out, the jets were in, but I thought some on here were saying we would win because of point margin or something??????????

Mike and Mike are looking at tiebreakers as of this morning - Jets still ahead on tiebreakers at the moment based upon Steelers having played one less conference game - that evens out after next week and the tiebreakers go the Steelers way if they win out

The Patriots**** are back on top the topsy-turvy AFC, and the Steelers are their biggest threat

For the Patriots****, there’s no scarier team in the conference than the Steelers, no matter their 8-5 record or current place in the standings. Antonio Brown is the best wide receiver and punt returner in football, and Martavis Bryant would further stretch the Patriots****’ thin secondary. Ben Roethlisberger has beaten Bill Belichick three times; only Peyton Manning has done it more among active quarterbacks. The Patriots**** could shred Pittsburgh’s defense, but the Steelers’ offense would could turn a matchup into an anything-could-happen shootout....

For now, the Chiefs and Jets hold the wild-card spots, but the Steelers will make the playoffs if they win out.

The Chiefs are sitting prettiest. They have the easiest schedule, playing at Baltimore and then hosting the Browns and Raiders. If they win out, their 9-3 conference record would give them a tiebreaker over either the Steelers or Jets. They also beat the Steelers in Week 7. The Chiefs should win all of their games, but even if they don’t, they’ll have tiebreakers to fall back on.

As of now, the Jets hold the last wild-card spot. But if the Steelers and Jets both win out, the Steelers would pull ahead of them on account of the schedule. The Jets hold the conference-record tiebreaker now. But the Steelers play three AFC teams the rest of the way, while the Jets play just two. The Steelers and Jets would both be 8-4 in the conference record if they both win out. The next tiebreaker would be common games, and there the Steelers would have an edge. If both teams win out, the Steelers would be 4-1 against the Raiders, Browns, Patriots**** and Colts. The Jets would be 3-2 – their Week 8 loss at Oakland would be the difference.

It’s far from automatic both teams win out. The Steelers will face the Broncos this week, then close on the road at Baltimore and Cleveland. The Jets finish at Dallas, against the Patriots**** and at Buffalo. All things considered, if you’re betting on the two AFC wild-card teams, bet on Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2015/12/13/the-Patriots****-are-back-on-top-in-the-topsy-turvy-afc-and-the-steelers-are-their-biggest-threat/

the playoff picture is simple....win out, and we're in.

Due to the tie-breaking rules, the Steelers would best the Jets for the 6th seed.
