PostSubject: FSU settles for $950,000 in Jameis Winston rape case   Tue Jan 26, 2016 8:37 pm

(CNN)Florida State University has reached a $950,000 settlement with a former student who sued the school after alleging she was raped by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston, school President James Thrasher said in a Monday statement.

Erica Kinsman has agreed to drop her Title IX lawsuit against the school, the statement said.

"Although we regret we will never be able to tell our full story in court, it is apparent that a trial many months from now would have left FSU fighting over the past rather than looking toward its very bright future," Thrasher said, adding that he was confident the trial would've yielded the same conclusion as two investigations and a student conduct hearing that cleared Winston.

Maybe now he will be under rated and never be in any commercials his entire career.

After Settlement, Florida State Shows Sympathy for Victim: Itself

Given that the university did not even approach Winston about Kinsman’s accusations until January 2014, after the Seminoles had won the national championship; that the Tallahassee Police Department’s investigation was so slipshod that the local prosecutor threw up his hands when the case finally landed on his desk; that Kinsman was shunned by her fellow students, called a slut and a whore and a liar, and essentially forced off campus as the football-mad student body rallied around its quarterback — given all that, you might think the president of the university would want to issue a statement that would foster a little, you know, healing...

But that’s apparently not how Thrasher does business. ...

Taking a potshot at her lawyers, Thrasher claimed that they would pocket $700,000 of the $950,000. (“Not even close,” Baine Kerr, one of Kinsman’s lawyers, replied.)

In fact, Thrasher explained, the sole reason the university was settling the case was to avoid “additional litigation expenses.”...

There were a few things Thrasher conveniently left out of his statement.

He failed to note that Winston’s scheduled deposition was only three weeks away, and that those who were to give depositions also included two other football players; an associate athletic director, Monk Bonasorte, who appears to be the team’s fixer; and the campus police chief. Surely, Thrasher and other F.S.U. officials were not daunted by the prospect of Winston and the others testifying under oath, were they?

Defendants trotting out the "cost of additional litigation expenses" as cover for the reason they settle is the equivalent of politicians and corporate executives saying they want to spend more time with their family when they walk the plank.
