Steelers Vs Eagles: Winners And Losers

BY ALEX KOZORA SEPTEMBER 25, 2016

LOSERS

Keith Butler: Hard not to start this list without a coach. I’m not going to claim the team was lazy, expected to win, and didn’t prepare – they did – it was just an abysmal gameplan. Giving up 34 points in a game is unacceptable, regardless of circumstance, to an Philadelphia Eagles team that doesn’t exactly how an immensely potent offense.

Sure, it was a tough spot to be win with poor individual execution, but there was again barely a pass rush on Carson Wentz, and Butler was unable to draw up any scheme that even seemed to both a rookie. Dick LeBeau was known as the rookie QB killer. One challenge in, Butler looks like the rookie QB whisperer.

And they probably would have lost to the browns if they played them like how they did today

I'm not going to take anything away from Wentz. He is confident but why wouldn't he be when the opposing defense has NO teeth. If our D continues to play like this it's gonna be a long year.
That';s just the defense. Our O-line was pathetic too. Ben couldn't hit a 6'7" TE who was wide open and Wheaton couldn't catch a cold. Neither side helped the other out. It was a TEAM lack of effort. Piss poor outing to say the least.

it seriously looked like a basic 4-3 defense yesterday...how was that supposed to confuse Wentz?

I'd say overall, the defense has been better than previous years so I'm not going to let one game make me call for the coach's head. The team is allowed to have one terrible game a year (and boy was this TERRIBLE).

Hopefully this was it and now we will see a flurry of blitzes from the defense.

Sad thing is, gonna have to blitz to get any pressure and put more pressure on that young secondary. Need something from Moats, because Jones is just terrible, Deebo is showing he is in his final year and Chickillo is just too inexperienced as a OLB.

Steelers needed Bud Dupree to start this year. He would have been a huge help. He showed nice flashes his first year and the Steelers linebackers always play better in their second season when they show their skills in their rookie year.

Pass rush saves you from so many things when things arent going well. It was a problem even in the first 2 games. If they do not solve this problem, Brady will eat them alive in the playoffs. And so will Flacco.

What's the deal with Justin Gilbert? Maybe they should push to start him on the outside and move gay to the slot. Specially if we're going to blitz more. Maybe Davis and Burns are not quite ready yet

10 WORST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES FROM SUNDAY’S WEEK 3 ACTION

by SAM MONSON

Every Tuesday, PFF will be releasing its list of the lowest-graded players at each NFL position for that week. But Senior Analyst Sam Monson gets a jump on that by picking out 10 individual performances from Sunday’s games that stood out for just how bad they were.

Here are the 10 worst performances from Sunday’s Week 3 action:

3. Ryan Shazier, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers

After an excellent performance in the first game of the season, Shazier has regressed back to poor play, struggling in coverage against the Eagles in particular. He was in primary coverage on five targets, four of which were caught for 103 yards and a touchdown, as he was the chief victim of Eagles running back Darren Sproles out of the backfield.

QBs are completing 27% of passes & averaging 4.7 yards a play when Steelers send 5. Why aren't we seeing it more?

Sending 5 isn't the ultimate answer....to be a truly great defense you need to be able to cause Mayhem with just 4.

But as others have alluded to... we don't have the pass rushers to get the job done....and it puts us in a pickle.

I don't claim to have the answer to this problem, the failure of the Jones pick and Dupree being out has put them in a bind... but they better figure out a remedy fast.....these next two games are huge and really important for our positioning in the afc.

Ever notice how you never hear about Belichick's assistant coaches? Its all Belichick. Head Coach is a head coach for a reason. It is his job to make adjustments when things arent working. Not just the assistant.

I disagree. Chickillo is quick and has a motor, but doesn't appear strong enough yet to get the edge on the wide rush. He is just running around too wide. He converts speed to power in his bull rush, but I think he still looks like he needs to be able to walk the OT all the way back in the pocket, or use his hands to shorten the arc in the speed rush. It will happen and hopefully later this season.

In the run game he is OK and his D-line experience helps with that, but again I think he needs to get a bit stronger. I am a fan and think he has the tools, but he isn't there yet IMO although he looks promising and the reps have to help.

To Nobody’s Surprise, Steelers Worse Than Everyone Defending RB Passes

BY MATTHEW MARCZI SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

This may not exactly come to you as a shock, but over the course of the first three weeks of the season, no defense in the league has had a harder time stopping running backs from having success in the passing game than have the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Courtesy of the abundantly useful Pro Football Reference, the Steelers have faced the fifth-highest number of targets to running backs over that span (25), have allowed the fourth-highest number of completions (21), given up by far the highest number of yards (290, when the nearest is 235), and are one of four teams to allow more than one touchdown reception to the position, with nobody having more than two.

If that were not enough, only three teams have allowed more than the Steelers’ three rushing touchdowns allowed, and they have allowed it on fewer touches than anybody else higher on the list. Their five total touchdowns allowed to running backs ranks as the fifth-most in the league—and they have only allowed a total of six touchdowns thus far this season.

As we know, of course, the bulk of this has come after the catch, although that is virtually always the case when we are talking about running backs, who routinely receive their passes at or near, if not behind, the line of scrimmage.

Recent examples, however, have been dramatic, as Eagles running back Darren Sproles exploded against the Steelers, who gave up their only two plays of at least 40 yards of the season to him on Sunday. The bulk of the yardage on his 40- and 73-yard receptions against Pittsburgh were after the catch yards.

Bengals running back Giovani Bernard also holds two of the eight longest plays that the Steelers have allowed this season with receptions of 24 and 25 yards, the latter of which went for a touchdown after he forced two missed tackles on Pittsburgh’s rookie defenders.

Between just Sproles and Bernard alone, the Steelers have allowed 15 receptions on 17 targets for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Now, it should be acknowledged that these two running backs are among the shiftiest and most accomplished pass-catchers at the running back position currently in the league.

With that said, it should not be dismissed that the team is clearly having a major problem with respect to preventing opposing running backs from getting involved heavily in the passing game, and a lot of this has to do with the fact that they are missing tackles, which is producing this significant YAC yardage.

I see a lot of ass kissing about their douchebag o and d coaches Patricia and mcdaniels.....it borders on the rob Ryan territory on how much air time they get on the cameras.

playing zone keeping the pass in front of the secondary and missing the tackle pretty much sums up this defense.

a lot of growing pains with the youngsters. NFL receivers are shiftier and quicker then the college receivers. will take them a bit to learn this under fire in live game action but imho this is the best way to learn.

get it on tape watch tape with coaches and then let the coaches teach. remember the number 1 and 2 draft picks were very raw coming out of college. coming out of college raw can be a good thing if the player listens and coachable a coach has less bad habits to break but more mistakes will be made.

imho I'll take the raw kid with the talent and speed who is a hard worker and coach him up the Steelers way might not always be pretty but will pay off in the long run. I'm a Steelers fan for the long run and this isn't the first defensive rebuild I've seen.

Damnit lets fire coaches every three years that should fixes the problem.

Keith Butler On Steelers Poor Pass Rush: ‘It Really Comes Down To Beating Guys One-On-One’

BY DAVE BRYAN SEPTEMBER 29, 2016

I don’t need to tell any of you how disappointing the pass rush of the Pittsburgh Steelers defense has been so far through the team’s first three games and I certainly don’t have to tell defensive coordinator Keith Butler that, either. During his weekly segment on Steelers Nation Radio, Butler talked about how his defense is failing to get the job done so far this season when it comes to not only getting sacks, but applying pressure on opposing quarterbacks as well.

“Last year we were third in the league in sacks and we’ve got to really come on,” Butler told Miss Matthews. “Were behind right now in terms of sacking people at the rate we want to sack them and putting pressure on the quarterback, making him make decisions he don’t want to make. And we’ve got to do a better job of that and well try to do a little bit better than we have been.”

Something certainly does need to change moving forward when it comes to the Steelers defensive pass rush and while it sounds like Butler is actively addressing that issue this week in practice, he’s not willing to say what differences we’ll see schematically this Sunday.

“I’d rather not right now because I don’t want to tell anybody what we’re doing in terms of trying to improve it and stuff like that,” Butler said. “So, there are some things schematically we can do a little bit better, but it really comes down to beating guys one-on-one and stuff like that.

“Sometimes guys are double-teamed, it makes it tough for them, but not everybody’s double-teamed. Everybody that rushes is not double-teamed and when you’re not double-teamed, you’ve got to produce.”

When Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Tuesday, he indicated the same thing that Butler did as it relates to defensive players needing to win their one-on-one matchups while rushing the passer.

“We have to do a better job of putting these guys in position to win those one-on-one (pass-rush) matchups, and they in turn have to win those one-on-one matchups,” Tomlin said.

The Steelers have registered just one sack so far this season and even that one left a lot to be desired as it was recorded by outside linebacker Arthur Moats after he had originally dropped into coverage in the Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. To nobody’s surprise, that one sack currently has the Steelers ranked last in the league in that statistical category.

If it’s any consolation, the Steelers will host the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday night at Heinz Field and their quarterback Alex Smith enters the game having already been sacked 9 times so far this season.

Well, with any luck, maybe Alex will trip to the ground and get tagged so at least we'll have 2.

I pretty much cringed every time they threw a pass to a RB, all day they had success with that. Everyone is talking about Carson Wentz like he went out and did something phenomenal or made some fantastic throws to really beat the Steelers himself but honestly his success was more on our lack of defense than anything else. Wentz made a couple of nice throws, but he didn't get hit all day, and had all the time in the world to stand in the pocket. Most of his throws were of the shorter variety and the running backs were picking up huge chunks of yards. I still won't believe Wentz is the real deal until he faces an elite defensive front 7 that can generate consistent pressure and he still picks that defense apart.

Glad you brought this up. I'm tired of the Wentz hype this past week. I think its a bit overdone. Like you said it was more us than him. After all we've made guys like Brian Hoyer look like the second coming.

Like most people here are saying, the lack of pass rush is killing us and i think it starts with Jarvis Jones. Its only magnified now with Dupree out and Harrison aging. Jones is not cutting it. And for a first round pick with his rep in college (sac Man Jones) he should be generating real pressure - at least. Now i imagine the coaches are considering sending 5 or even six. Hopefully our pass protection can hold up with 6 or 5 back.

Yep as really what they did as the team was not there. And that Harrison will have to be replace sooner rather than later.
