Steelers set to have historic amounts of salary cap space in 2017

By: Simon A Chester | October 28, 2016

The 2017 offseason marks a change for the Pittsburgh Steelers that some might have felt would never happen. For a team that has seemingly spent forever in the bottom third of the league when it comes to salary cap space, they will enter uncharted territory next year with an unprecedented amount of money to spend.

While some sites present this data in its most literal form, the numbers can be misleading as they fail to account for rollover amounts, outstanding team debts or obvious roster additions every franchise will make at the end of the season.

To give you a more accurate perspective, we have included all of these factors into our accounting for a more precise look at the Steelers cap position heading into 2017. Our calculation is based off an assumed league-wide cap limit of $165 million, a figure some experts predict will be higher, but provides a conservative baseline that will hopefully only increase.

Unless they use that money to fill voids, it's useless money

So they are going to sign Bell if he doesn't want something outrageous for a contract. A/V will get a decent offer to play LT, otherwise they will plan ahead with Hawkins. AB will get a contract and they should have some $$ to find an OLB that can rush the passer or a safety, or both.

Melvin Ingram is a FA, so he could instantly provide some pass rush and solid run play at OLB.

Sign/Re-sign: Bell, Brown, Timmons. Don't be shocked if Jarvis is brought back also, unless it's an overpay(which could be the case).

FA signing(s): Jabard Sheard, more depth.

If they bring back Jones, they likely let Moats and Harrison go and sign somebody of talent in free agency. I still think Moats is better than Jones and they need to just move on. The Jarvis Jones experiment is like a bad relationship, you need to dump her and go find somebody better instead of staying in the same bad situation.

Zero chance Harrison comes back.

OLB's on the 53 who are under contract for next season: Dupree, Moats, Chickillo.

Jarvis is better than all 3 of those guys. (Hoping Dupree changes that )
