Mike Tomlin: “We should win it all”

Mike Florio,ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports

Many believe that the Steelers are legitimate Super Bowl contenders, the current status of Sunday night’s game against the Packers notwithstanding. One person who believes it, and who isn’t bashful about saying it, is Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

“Oh, we can win it all,” Tomlin told Tony Dungy of NBC’s Football Night in America. “We should win it all. I think that’s my mentality. I think that’s their mentality. But I’m less concerned about that and more concerned about what are the things that we’re going to do along the way to make that happen.”

Tomlin also knows that, along the way to make that happen, the Steelers will encounter the Patriots* at least once, and maybe twice. He’s not afraid to talk about that.

“I’m going to embrace the elephant in the room,” Tomlin said. “There’s going to be fireworks. But it’s probably going to be part one. You know? . . .

Play man to man and don’t give Marsha all day to throw. That’s the elephant in the room.

Something tells me our offense will be fine this time. We should have Bell, Bryant and JJSS available. It’s the D I’m worried about. Hopefully Haden and Deebo will be playing.

I really want to beat them and I'm honestly glad Tomlin is showing he does too. I hate those guys. I want our D to make Brady consider retiring after giving him the worst shallacking of his life. It's not going to be easy though because Brady does have her number but I like our defense and the offense seems to be clicking. HF advantage though will be vital.

Mike Tomlin Promises ‘Fireworks’ Vs. Patriots**, Already Looking Ahead To AFC Championship Rematch

November 27, 2017
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — If there’s one thing that hasn’t been lacking from the Steelers in recent years, it’s bulletin board material from their head coach — specifically as it relates to the Patriots**.

I feel like they've got something up their sleeves for the Patriots*, something they haven't shown yet.

To me this is the "we're so good all we have to do is show up" mentality. You know, the one that lets us loose to inferior teams.
It allows Tomlin to look past teams on our way and the way we play shows it. It's one thing to be confident. I'm all for that but when you think because a team like Green Bay is wounded you don't even have to plan your game. Now that's plain stupid.

I honestly thought they had a good game plan. This game shouldn't have been close at all.

Ben was on fire, he completed 73% of his passes, and that's even with 5 or so drops by the receivers. The defense was mostly to blame, beating themselves with blown coverages and untimely penalties. The first 7 points green bay had was 100% artie burns' fault. A penalty which gave up a first down on a GB drive that would have otherwise stalled, and then blowing the coverage for an easy TD.

Roethlisberger On Tomlin Patriots* Comment: ‘I Am 100% On Cincinnati’

“He’s the head coach, he’s allowed to think about whatever game or whatever elephant in the room or whatever matchups, things like that. For me, I am 100% on Cincinnati and nothing else. That is my biggest focus because these guys are going to come out to get us. I mean they want to ruin our playoff chances.”

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2017/11/28/ben-roethlisberger-on-tomlin-Patriots*-comment-i-am-100-on-cincinnati/
----------------------------

Ben is saying the right thing, but there's no doubt the Patriots* game was circled on the calendar when the schedule came out. It would be delusional to say that they're not the elephant in the room. But I don't think that necessarily means the steelers are looking past other teams. They have a history of playing down to the competition, so struggling to beat the packers really shouldn't have surprised anyone. We want them to bury weaker teams, but for whatever reason, that's not what they do.

I wish he hadn't made the elephant in the room comments. I don't know it's a good thing to let them know he or the Steelers would be that focused on the game..especially after the AB incident at the playoffs last year.

That being said, I've always had the feel after these cheater losses wondering if the Steelers coaches and players had any conception how badly we (fans)hate that cheating scum. It feels good to a certain extent that the upcoming game is on their minds as well as ours. Man I am just counting the days until the cheats crumble...the only players older than Marcia now are kickers.

Going into this weekend Steelers are #1 seed. Tennessee is 3 at 7-4. The way it stands right now they have a 3 game lead (with tiebreaker) over the 3rd seed with 5 games remaining. Watched Jags game over weekend, even though they lost, could see how that D would give cheats playoff trouble.

Hoping Haden is back soon and they nail the cheats to the wall in December. Be cool for Steelers to unleash harrison for that game and give him a final day of glory knocking marcia around.

Its all redundant and silly to talk about it considering this team is struggling against sub 500 teams week in and week out. This team hasn’t played a full 60 minutes of football well in any game. They have made mistakes all year long either on offense, defense and Special teams. They struggle to get into the end zone and close games out.

Right now the Patriots* are a far superior coached and led team. They make minimal mistakes game to game and when they do they put up so many points that they can recover from them something the Steelers have trouble doing.

I am hoping that I am wrong but from what I have seen and history tells me we should expect having to travel in the playoffs and losing a shot at the SB...

Tru dat. At this point hard to fathom things will be any different.

For me at this point an AFC CG victory against them would be my greatest non Super Bowl memory. I've been following them since 1978 and no other game would be sweeter. I'd definitely want any victory like that to be convincing but at the same time it seems somehow like it might be fitting and all the sweeter that the game is decided by a controversial call and the cheats end up getting cheated out of a SB

I'm not sure my heart could handle a playoff game like that against the Patriots*. I'd prefer 49-0. At halftime.

the Steelers have a damn good team the best in the Tomlin area and it is going to be a nail bitter to the end.

Jemele Hill said "todd haley was hired to keep Mike Tomlin just above average as a headcoach" she then pointed out how the Seahawks who were millions of dollars below the salary cap hired Pete Carroll as headcoach to draft all the players he scouted as the USC headcoach.

before haden got injured, I was confident that this secondary could be good enough to stop brady from going off. now? I'm not so sure.

In a way I wish Tomlin didn't say "We should win it all", as that paints a huge target on our heads now. That's basically bulletin board material for every team is going to face us. Non-Patriots* squads we face in the playoffs are going to be pissed at us for 'overlooking' them as contenders. Patriots* are gonna want to defend their crown as the current defending champs.

However, will be nice if the team accepts it as a challenge. As a team they're gonna have to ball out because other teams are coming to try and prove us wrong now.

Oh yeah a 49-0 rub their nose in it game would be sweet. But somehow after hearing their fans all these years that Spygate didn't help them in the 01 and 04 AFC CG, and how it all should be forgotten since they would have won anyhow...it just seems like it would be really sweet to see Steelers ahead late game, a tuck rule type play at Steelers 20, that allowed to Steelers maintain possession late in the game to run the clock out(denying cheats a chip shot field goal)

Same here. When it comes to the Patriots* we need a total cleanup or romp. I don't want a close game.

That penalty was total BS. His hands were never near the face of the Packer's player. So Packers had to punt the ball on their first drive and maybe we would have watched an easy victory.

On the topic, I don't mind Tomlin addressing the elephant in the room. Everyone knows that game is going to be crucial, the media, the players, the coaches, the fans, everyone from the Patriots* so imo you better don't avoid the subject and be very clear about it. It's not like he's going to motivate them (they also know the importance of the game) or other teams. Bengals, Ravens and Browns are rivals so they were already motivated to play against us, just like most teams. All teams are motivated to play against teams like Steelers, Patriots*, Packers, Cowboys, Seahawks... because they are big names.

I'm more of a stats and history sort of fan and never been much into the X's and O's, so this may come off as stupid, but always wondered why they don't come out with some unexpected wrinkle on a team like the Pats* that they've not been able to beat.

Maybe do something like play the game with Bell lining up as WR and having Conner at RB. I know Bell not a WR, and Conner maybe not best choice because of inexperience, but Bell a good receiver and Conner is like a cannonball and completely different style than Bell. Maybe a 2 back set, just anything like that that may throw the other side off.

Of course the first thought that comes to mind is the "you can't fool belicheat". But I think back to the first time Miami pulled the Wildcat on them, also remember a game when belicheat was coach with a playoff caliber Cleveland team in 94, Cowher coach, and the Steelers were a run first team. Everyone figured they'd come out running. They came out with Neil O'Donnell throwing and threw Cleveland off their game plan.

Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat transcript: 1.15.18

RAY FITTIPALDO
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
JAN 15, 2018

Ray Fittipaldo: Welcome to my Steelers chat. Let's get started.

Chowdah Mullaney: just seems like this all comes back to Tomlin . Great organizational talent engine, and absolutely pathetic coaching.

Chowdah Mullaney: all trolling aside, how much blame do you lay at the feet of the coaching staff? Pitt is far and away the most talented team in the NFL, but they are routinely unprepared, baited into stupid plays(how bout a QB sneak) of which they actually got away w a few today (2 4th down 40+ completions) and can’t focus on what’s in front of them. People around the Pats* organization said all weekend “don’t be surprised if that jag team comes out and knocks pitt out”.

Ray Fittipaldo: Nice handle, Chowdah. I lay lots of blame at the feet of the coaches, and I start at the top with Mike Tomlin. When he did that interview with Tony Dungy and looked ahead to the Patriots* Part I and Part II. That gave his players the freedom to do the same. It was inexcusable for him to do that and a fireable offense in my opinion. I don't know if the Steelers will hold him accountable, but he made an egregious error when he answered that question by Dungy. Haley isn't likely to return and I'm not sure about Butler either. But for me it starts and stops with Tomlin. This season was a bad reality show.

Well said by Ray. I don't know if I can recall another time where a team's head coach gave the other team bulletin board material. I've never been one to call for throwing out the coaches but after this Haley and Butler need to go and Tomlin needs a serious talk from Rooney. He needs to stop letting the inmates run the asylum. As much as yesterday sucked they would have lost next week to NE anyhow after Tomlin's SB and Mitchell's Haiti or Hell comment
