Mike Tomlin Does Not Have Requisite Control of the Steelers

By: Henry McKenna | 1/15/18

The circus came to Pittsburgh.

Mike Tomlin’s players looked unprepared and unfocused in the first half of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ upset of the Steelers on Sunday. Tomlin only has himself to blame. The Steelers coach has created a laissez-faire environment where players can say and do whatever they want.

The result was a disorganized group of highly talented players who couldn’t get their act together for a Super Bowl run.

The criticism is well deserved and overdue. I've seen enough of the Tomlin era.

Hard cold truths. Way way too much talent and a complete lack of focus, preparation, and execution. The end result equals 1and done.

Bryant = distractions
Bell = distractions selfish hold outs
Brown = distractions
Harrison = distractions

Shit needs to stop.

I couldn't agree more. I started following the Steelers in 78 and I've never wanted a coach removed. This year I'm ready and hoping changes will be made. At least Haley and better yet Butler too.

I'm sort of on the fence about Tomlin. I always felt like with equal to better talent he would lose a chess match when it mattered to belicheat. Now it feels like he also doesn't have control of the team and himself to avoid saying stupid things that motivate the other team before the game is even played. The AB video incident should have shown him something last year. A year later he's talking about playing NE 2x and winning the SB in November. His players are talking about playing NE before the playoffs even start, and again when Jax is their opponent. Mike Mitchell is telling the world the Steelers will beat the Pats* in Haiti or Hell. He might want to save money for the plane tickets because they couldn't even do it in Pittsburgh.

Tomlin needs to send the message that the game is 60 minutes long, the season is 16 games long, then the playoffs starts and your opponent is the team you play your first game. He also might remember what happened this year and years past and tell these guys to stay off social media and watch what they say in public....of course he might want to lead by example there.

I'm tired of the underachieving, the jags game for me was the last straw and i don't see us turning the corner unless changes are made. There's no doubt we have the players - as the 1st team and pro bowl voting showed. i'd like to see wholesale 'improvement' in the coaching staff from top to bottom,

I just don't see anyone better out there. He needs to claim control of this team and develop the one game at a time mentality.
No more distractions with players running their mouths on social media and to the press. It starts with him.
Until he does this we will not be a team but a bunch of individuals doing their own thing with a faux coach telling the media that "this is not a distraction". Man up and be the coach. Not their buddy.

Tomlin not ready to talk about potential coaching-staff changes

Mike Florio, ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports

Amid increasing chatter than Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, whose contract is expiring, won’t return, coach Mike Tomlin did nothing to fuel — or extinguish — those flames during a season-ending press conference on Tuesday.

Tomlin told reporters regarding his staff, “I don’t know where these roads are going to lead,” and Tomlin made it clear that he’s not ready to address the situation “at this point.”

Tomlin has informed the defensive coaches that no changes are coming.

Yay more of Keith Butler's ineptitude. Not knowing when to run zone, or when to run man. His players out of position giving up big plays. Letting an offense that scored only 10 points against Buffalo march into our home turf in the playoffs and score 45 freaking points with Blake Bortles at QB. I'm sorry but the one coach I think we needed to get rid of most is Butler.

I keep seeing references to the Buffalo game, but what people keep forgetting was that it was incredibly windy at that game. Passes were being blown way off of target for both teams. So it was basically stack the box and stop the run. Bortles making runs off of play action was why he had more rushing yards than passing yards.

I don't disagree with the sentiment. However, where were the big stars making plays. I don't think it was just Butler making bad calls, bad schemes or poor coaching. At the end of the day, Jacksonville didn't do anything special on offense. We weren't watching zone blocking that confounded the Steelers defense in the past. The Jags lined up and fired off. It was drive blocking at it's best. Where were Heyward, Tuitt, Hargrave? Heyward had 1 tackle, Hargrave 1, Tuitt 3 (1 being the screen), Alualu 1, Walton 1. The Steelers don't run the 2 gap defense where they just take up blockers. Those defensive linemen were expect to own their assigned gaps and make the plays. It was rare to see Fournette get stopped at the line. He was usually running through those holes that a d-lineman should have been clogging.

The Steelers were 1-and-done because the defensive front 7 got physically dominated, period. There were no play calls or coaching changes that was going to correct that. I'm not bashing those guys. Sooner or later, if you play the game long enough, you will be on the receiving end of an ass whipping that you weren't expecting. But at the end of the day, it was the front 7 that was most responsible for giving up 38 of the 45 points on their home turf.

He is making a big mistake keeping Butler, Porter, and Lake around. They have produced nothing and have had plenty of draft picks, FAs, and time to show growth and it’s just not there. Absolute terrible defense production throughout the year, undisciplined play, zero adjustments during games. Vanilla Butler...

The heat on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is justified up to a point

Yahoo Sports Charles Robinson

It is the incurable virus of the NFL, this January spate of second-guessing. Even in the league’s most celebrated tapestry of iconic head coaches, none has been immune to it. Not Vince Lombardi. Not Bill Walsh or Chuck Noll. Not Don Shula or Tom Landry. Not even Bill Belichick, whose unmatched career is pocked with trades that were (briefly) called into question, or failed draft choices that faded with time, or even the occasional team-related investigation by the NFL.

This is the reality that undoubtedly steadies Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers ownership now. The inescapable fact that even the most hardened dynasties in league history have not been immune to criticism. And in turn, the acceptance that some of that criticism was warranted. This is where the Steelers and Tomlin are situated, at the crossroads of failure and self-reflection. And that might be the best thing that could have happened to a franchise that showed signs of having gotten a little arrogant.

Ron Cook: Yes, Mike Tomlin has room to improve

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
JAN 23, 2018

Mike Tomlin is a good coach. I believe he’s the second-best coach in the NFL. But it has become clearer than ever that the gap between him and Bill Belichick is enormous. It is just as clear that Tomlin can be so much better. Art Rooney II should demand that he be better.

I thought about that Sunday as I watched James Harrison get a big sack to help the New England Patriots* beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on their way to Super Bowl LII. Harrison was at the center of much that went wrong for Tomlin this season. Releasing Harrison when he did and allowing him to go to the Steelers’ biggest rival might have been Tomlin’s worst mistake. That easily could have been Ben Roethlisberger who Harrison sacked late in the AFC championship, not the Jaguars’ Blake Bortles.

If you are under the delusion that a head coach will all of a sudden become a better coach a decade into his job is a little unrealistic. Tomlin does not have the skill set to scheme well enough to make a difference. I really do not know what he does to be honest.

He made one great call in a dream he had before SB 43. That's about it. What else does he do? I don't know. D+ Quarterbacks ran his team up and down all year and he never did shit about it.

anyone else remember cowher ? who replaced cowher ? a no name called mike tomlin. so for those of you saying , "well who could we get that would do any better" ? ...remember who replaced cowher.

speaking of cowher, remember he was always compared to marty shottenhiemer ? the guy who always finished with a good record and then shit to bed in the playoffs ? remember san diego shit canning him after a 15-1 season ? they canned him for under achieving. no matter how good of a season they had, the end results were always the same...no super bowl trophy...which is the goal of every team , every year.

Marty's apologists were a joke. He was the worst choker in post season history until Cowher upstaged him.

God Bless Ambassador Rooney for stopping Cowher from taking Shawn Andrews after the Manning's made their power play.

And God Bless Butch Davis and Al Davis for being out of touch idiots during the same draft.
