Steelers furious as NFL overturns suspension for Bengals' George Iloka

George Iloka had his suspension reduced, JuJu Smith-Schuster didn't and the Steelers weren't happy with either development Wednesday.

In an emotionally charged post-practice locker room, Ramon Foster took a verbal shot at the NFL's vice president of football operations, and Mike Mitchell and Maurkice Pouncey railed against the league's disciplinary standards.

Jon Runyan, the NFL vice president who levied the suspensions Monday, was called a “pawn” by Foster, the Steelers union representative. Pouncey called the disciplinary process “stupid,” and Mitchell said the NFL is trying to turn the sport into “flag football.”

The reactions came a few hours after Iloka, the Bengals safety who delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Steelers receiver Antonio Brown during a fourth-quarter touchdown catch, had his one-game suspension reduced to a $36,464.50 fine. On Tuesday night, Smith-Schuster's appeal of his one-game suspension for his illegal hit and taunt of Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was upheld.

Agreed. I need a logical explanation as to why JuJu's suspension was upheld, while Iloka's was overturned.

They should at least fine Burfict for getting in JU JU's way. I could live with that type of ruling.

Troy Vincent, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations, said during a conference call with the media that taunting was not a factor in the decision to suspend Smith-Schuster.

“Taunting was never considered, at least from our office,” Vincent said. “It was the act of hitting Vontaze Burfict in the head area. The taunting was not considered. Are we sending a mixed message? We’ve been very consistent, fair, firm.”

Wait, so if taunting wasn't considered, how exactly was JuJu's hit worse than Iloka's? Either Troy Vincent is lying, or he doesn't know what consistent and fair means. Apparently, he also doesn't know what mixed messages are.

Juju squared up and smashed burfict head on. That was barely a blindside block, if even. At some point the defenders have to be accountable for seeing someone coming at them.

Iloka left his feet and launched himself at Brown. According to the rules that's a definite foul, you're not supposed to leave your feet and spear a receiver making a catch. Juju blocked a player who probably would have made a tackle on Bell, and didnt leave his feet while making the hit. Really stupid as hell, Iloka's hit was worse. But Juju got penalized harder just because Burfict was hurt on the play.
