I guess this makes it pretty unlikely Patterson would make the team. A decent kick returner:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are acquiring wide receiver Ryan Switzer in a trade with the Oakland Raiders.

Switzer confirmed the move to ESPN's Josina Anderson, saying he's "heading to Pittsburgh tonight."

Switzer, a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2017 who has been traded twice in the past 121 days, finished his rookie year with six catches for 41 yards.

The Steelers need help in the return game, and Switzer has experience in that area. Last year, Switzer posted 256 punt return yards and one touchdown on 29 tries (8.8 yards per attempt, ranking 12th in the league), along with 600 kickoff return yards on 24 tries (25 yards per attempt, third leaguewide).

Makes no sense to me trading for a STs player. Why not try Patterson on returns?

he's a 5'8" slot receiver and ran a 4.5 forty at the combine. he had a pretty nice career at NC as a receiver and returner. he did both kick offs and punt returns. from what i've read he's a student of the game . runs good routes, very quick in short spaces but lacks speed for separation. Dallas cut him because they had a better option , but according to Ian report, he was going to be the odd man out in Oakland.
of course because he is a short white guy , he was compared to jullian edleman and danny amedollah but with lesser skill set.

the trade was switzer and a 6th for pittsburghs 5th.

apparently quadry henderson has failed to impress . toussaint is a long shot to make the team, and cam sutton fumbled a punt against tennesee.

Yeah, he is smallish. He's not quite Stefan Logan numbers but close.

At WR they'd have: Washington, Brown, Schuster, possibly Hunter. Would Bey still make it with Switzer pick up? It would seem like it would be those 6 though and Patterson maybe to practice squad unless Bey or Hunter do not make it.

It's not Patterson's place he took imo. It's Toussaint's as a KR and Eli Rodgers' as a back-up slot WR for Juju. They both can search another team I guess. Patterson will need to fight with DHB for the sixth WR spot (if they keep 6 of course). That also means that Samuels will make the team as RB#3 imo.

I like this trade. We needed a KR/PR and now we have one of the best in the league.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2011/profiles/ryan-switzer?id=2557960

Strengths High-volume target for UNC QB Mitch Trubisky. Reliable pass catcher with low career drop rate. Sudden feet to shake press defenders out of his release. Plays at his top speed and doesn't coast. Accelerates and separates on speed outs. Utilizes repeatable footwork in routes. Patterns are crisp. Comes out of breaks at sharp angles and snaps head around immediately to find the ball. Owns comeback routes by driving hard back to the throw. Shows traits of effective option-route specialist in short-yardage and red area. Able to defeat inside leverage technique and find his way back underneath. Had five punt-return touchdowns his freshman season and has seven for his career, with 19 career returns of more than 15 yards.
Weaknesses Short target with very limited catch radius. Struggles to haul throws behind him. Needs accurate quarterbacking to do his job. Doesn't have get-away speed and will have NFL cornerbacks sitting on all of his underneath work. Benefits from misdirection within UNC offense. Not a hands-catcher. Routes feature similar speed throughout and could benefit from change of speeds. Quick but not overly athletic. Struggled to find yards for himself in catch-and-run hitch tosses and wide receiver screens.
Draft Projection Round 6
NFL Comparison David Anderson
Bottom Line Wes Welker and Julian Edelman have become go-to comparisons for undersized slot receivers who utilize option routes to torment defenders underneath, but Switzer isn't quite on that level. However, he's able to create separation underneath and shows quality release quickness. Switzer is a slot-only target with punt return skills, but he has to find the right scheme fit to become a factor in the NFL.

RAY FITTIPALDO updated his article from yesterday predicting the final roster to show the acquisition of Switzer:

Quote :
Receivers (6): Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Justin Hunter, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Ryan Switzer

The skinny: Brown, Smith-Schuster and Washington are locks, and Hunter is close to that. The Steelers might even give him some reps as the No. 3 receiver early in the season while Washington adjusts to the NFL game. Heyward-Bey is on the roster for special teams. With Eli Rogers likely to start the year on injured reserve, the acquisition of Ryan Switzer gives the Steelers a viable return specialist and a backup slot receiver.

His full roster prediction is here:

After hearing more about him I think he could help us both in the return game and as a backup slot receiver. Not a big time threat IMO but a reliable veteran.

Interesting trade. I think this was purely a special teams move. We're fine with our depth as far as WR goes. I think the team is still looking for a guy that can be consistent as a returner. That's one thing this team has been lacking for a long time. They keep trying different guys and they keep missing. If we had a threat on KR/PR outside of Antonio Brown it would definitely help this team. I don't mind the trade, I just hope that it works out.
