Mortensen walked back his report a few hours later. My best guess is that someone close to Ben told Mort than Ben was done. When it was reported, someone else close to Ben told Mort it wasn't true. Knowing Ben, both sources are accurate. Ben has a history of contemplating retirement at the end of the season, so it's likely that multiple people got multiple messages from him. With Ben, we'll know when we know.

Dude better lose some weight too. He looks like he can play on the Oline right now. Seriously I hope he makes it back and can sling it.

Joes Starkey in his Q&A today at PPG sort of said the same you did:

Quote :
Sunday Morning, @Shriverdown: News hound, the Steelers have an aging QB with nothing behind him; how will the Steelers remedy their future with only scalding mud at QB behind Roethlisberger?

Starkey: First, we must answer these questions, Mr. Shriverdown …

Will Ben even play next year, and will he be any good?

Is his eventual replacement already on the roster?

You might have seen the winds swirling around that first question this week, when ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tweeted sources were telling him Ben “has some doubt” he’ll play again. That was quickly followed, after a storm of fan angst, by this Mortensen tweet:

“Clarity to calm down the masses — the @Steelers are now optimistic Ben Roethlisberger will recover from elbow surgery to reattach three tendons. Not cleared to throw yet but he is tracking better and Ben himself wants and expects to play in 2020 and beyond, per sources.”

That was quick.

News Hound conclusion: Roethlisberger can be optimistic and have “some doubt” about his future. Both can be true. How can there not be some doubt? He will be a 38-year-old quarterback with three reattached elbow tendons. Even if the elbow heals, what else might go wrong?

Meanwhile, any rational observer has serious doubts as to whether his eventual replacement is on the roster. Duck Hodges, bless his beak, was never going to be the long-term answer. Mason Rudolph has a better skill set that Hodges, but his 10-game audition didn’t exactly scream “Future Star!”

Might Rudolph still develop into competent NFL starter? It’s possible. There might be a Neil O’Donnell in there somewhere. Rudolph deserves high marks for his return game against the Jets. He proved the traumatic events of the previous month didn’t ruin him. But he hasn’t proved much else — and don’t you want an elite player at that position, rather than just a competent one?

The Steelers certainly aren’t sold on Rudolph. You might have noticed he was still glued to the bench at the start of the Jets game, a week after Hodges threw four interceptions.

This is hardly an ideal situation moving forward, but as for next season, I would expect the Steelers to hope and pray on Roethlisberger, tentatively stick with Rudolph at No. 2 and perhaps bring in a veteran (Marcus Mariota? Ryan Fitzpatrick? Andy Dalton?) as insurance for Roethlisberger.

He followed his answer up with a question from himself"

Quote :
Joe Starkey, @Joestarkey1: Did you just say “Andy Dalton?”

Starkey: Yes. Yes I did. I’ve never been a huge Dalton fan, but in the end, I think he’s gotten a terribly unfair rap. The man owns a 69-61-2 career record with 203 touchdown passes and 117 interceptions. He can still play, too. If the tank-job Bengals had used him against the Steelers in Cincinnati, they would have won that game. Just last week, he went 33 for 56 for 396 yards and four touchdowns against Miami. I think this Steelers defense could win with Andy Dalton if Ben isn’t right.

Did I just say that out loud?

Despite what some fans think, reporters, especially veteran reporters, usually aren't making things up when they get something "wrong." Although there's truth in the saying that reporters want to be the first to break a story, they often know lots of stuff they don't report. So a respected reporter isn't going to make up something just so he/she can be the first. When you see a long-time reporter like Mort say something like this, it's all but a guarantee someone close to Ben told him.

He shows up to camp throws minimally starts the season and experiences another "reoccurring" arm injury and collecting his 35 million reasons why he is coming back next year.

The correct answer to this likely is that at this point no one including Ben really knows until he attempts it. He is under a doctor's guidance and hasn't even thrown yet. There likely always was a chance it could go either way, whether that's 50-50 or much better or worse, we don't know. Pitchers in baseball come back from Tommy John surgery all the time. Those usually younger than 38 but Jamie Moyer had it when he was mid 40's and still came back. From looking at him on the sidelines he may be pushing himself into needing a 2 pronged come back with the elbow and weight
