Report: Crosby has vertebrae abnormality

OTTAWA — According to a report from Sportsnet.ca, Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby may be dealing with an abnormality with his C1 and C2 vertebrae.

The Sportsnet report, citing Sportsnet radio host Bob McNown, says that Crosby saw an unidentified specialist in Utah, who diagnosed the injury through the use of magnetic resonance imaging.

Elliotte Friedman of CBC also reported the injury, mentioning it on the network's pre-game show and quoting Crosby agent Pat Brisson in a tweet.

"Sid did suffer a concussion, but last week, the possibility of two fractured vertebrae (C1 and C2) was discovered," Friedman said on Twitter. "A third doctor is being consulted to determine the exact diagnosis."

Penguins general manager Ray Shero did not mention the injury in comments Saturday morning about his star player.

Speaking to a small group of reporters after the Board of Governors meeting at the Fairmount Hotel here, Shero said Crosby had returned from Los Angeles and will meet with his team of concussion specialists this week.

Crosby was in Los Angeles earlier this week visiting Dr. Robert S. Bray, a California-based neurological spine surgeon. Crosby, who has been doing on-ice workouts for the past two weeks, skated while in Los Angeles. He also skated during an earlier trip to Atlanta to visit with Ted Carrick, a chiropractor who specializes in neurological issues. Carrick worked with Crosby in his comeback from the concussion he suffered this past January.

WHAT A GAME TONIGHT!!!!!

Pens with a HUGE comeback!!! Unbelievable to see them come back from 4-1 in the third period and win in a shootout!

Steve Sullivan FINALLY gave us something. He has been a total loss out there. He isn't shooting the puck and isn't creating enough scoring on a team that should have no trouble doing so. I know he isn't playing with Neal and Malkin anymore, but he wasn't doing much when he was with those two. If you can't put up solid numbers on that line, you aren't worth keeping. Kunitz is doing a great job. But with all that said, kudos to Sully tonight for toughening it out. He made some really nice plays and scored the goal that ignited the offense.

EIGHT IN A ROW. THE PENS TRAIN IS ROLLING!!!

I'm so mad at myself for turning the game off when the Leafs got their 4th goal. The Pens were just not playing that well, and never figured that would happen! Got to see the SO though, so that was good.

Geno's new theme song...

Lots going on for the Pens right now. Michalek was sent back to Phoenix. Staal was traded to the Canes for Sutter, 2 prospects, and a draft pick. Martin is being shopped as well...many hope for Suter out of Nashville.

And for today, Crosby agreed on his contract extension, which will keep him here for 12 more years.

Sidney Crosby wanted to be a Penguin for life. Now he's got the contract that should get him closer to his goal.

Crosby, Penguins agree on 12-year extension
Thursday, 06.28.2012 / 1:11 PM / News
By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

Crosby and the Penguins have agreed to terms on a 12-year contract extension worth $104.4 million. The contract, which will go into effect starting with the 2013-14 season and will last until Crosby is 37 years old, comes with an average annual value of $8.7 million. That's the same AAV that Crosby has in his current contract, which expires after the 2012-13 season.

According to the collective bargaining agreement, Crosby, 24, can't sign his extension until the free agency period opens at noon ET on July 1 because he already is under contract for the 2012-13 season.

It's also worth noting that this contract extension (moneywise) is still smaller than Obitchkins lol. Team first baby.

Malkin Focused in Offseason Training
Wednesday, 08.15.2012 / 9:26 PM / Features
By Michelle Crechiolo

As soon as Penguins strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar arrived in Moscow last month to help train Evgeni Malkin for the upcoming season, they went straight to a place that’s become very familiar to Kadar.

No, they didn’t go to a restaurant or to any of the numerous tourist attractions Moscow has to offer. They beelined straight for Malkin’s local fitness club.

“From the day I got there, as soon as I landed, we were at the gym,” Kadar said. “In the six years that I’ve known him, I haven’t seen him as focused as he has been the last couple years. It’s been unbelievable.”

Malkin’s work ethic hasn’t slipped one bit since last summer, when Kadar traveled to Russia to help the Penguins center strengthen the injured knee that ended his 2010-11 season prematurely and to improve his overall conditioning.

Malkin’s injury – damaged ligaments sustained in an on-ice collision – had been an eye-opener for the young Russian. It made him realize just how badly he wanted to be on the ice with his teammates and how much he wanted to play his best for them.

So with Kadar’s help, a committed Malkin trained relentlessly to rehab back from knee surgery – which typically takes about 18 months to fully recover from – to dominate the NHL as the league’s best player.

Malkin put together a magnificent season that saw him earn the Hart Trophy (league MVP), Art Ross Trophy (scoring champion), Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player as voted by peers) and score 50 goals in a season for the first time.

But despite all of that success, don’t think for a second that Malkin is lightening his load this summer – because he’s got unfinished business.

What Malkin truly wants has nothing to do with the individual accolades he’s accumulated. It has to do with that 35-pound silver chalice he hoisted above his head three years ago. The Stanley Cup is what he wants, and he’s hungrier than ever to lead his team back.

Malkin knows what he must do to return to the elite level he reached in 2011-12. Pair that with the sting of an early playoff exit, and you’ve got one extremely motivated and focused individual.

“I think Geno, after the year he had, he realizes what he needs to do to stay at that level,” Kadar said. “He wants to win. I think that even with everything he’s accomplished in his career, it’s still team-first for him. I think once you get that taste of success at that level, it’s hard not to want that again. He knows what he needs to do to make sure he’s there and I think he’s well on his way to being there again.”
