I thought you meant Neil Young at first. Neil is done 1797695198

Either way, bad news for music. Peart is widely considered the greatest rock drummer of all-time. Enjoy retirement, man!

I've seen Rush many times starting in 1977. Feeling sad and old.

As a lyricist, Peart is one of the best and most "out there" people I can think of and that's why he's always been on my personal short-list of people I'd love to meet and have a conversation with.

But as a drummer I've always considered him a "one-off" in that he was perfect for Rush (and I really like Rush) but I don't think he would be a good fit for another band.
Peart, to me, is like a handmade clock that was built specifically for Rush but his "parts" could not be interchanged with other drummers or other bands.

His timing is impeccable and he can do amazing things with triggers and sampling (which is a major part of Rush's music) and his drum solos include everything from standard drum licks and riffs to Big Band play-alongs and more.  But despite all of the creativity he didn't have "swing" and that showed when he tried to play other styles.

I don't think that something like "swing" can actually be learned, but I have to give him credit for recognizing that deficiency and trying to fix it in recent years by working with guys like Freddie Gruber and Peter Erskine in trying find the "space" he thought he was missing and to learn how lay it back and to play more by feel than by click-track.

But as far as Peart being Rush's drummer goes, I can't think of anyone else who could have done what he did for that band and I doubt that there are many (if any) drummers out there who could step into that situation and have it sound like Rush.

My absolute favorite drummer of all time will always be Vinnie Colaiuta (a drummer who truly knows what swing is), but I don't think that even he could do in Rush what Peart did because he'd likely end up "interpreting" Neil's parts instead of playing them and that would change everything and Rush wouldn't be Rush anymore.
That's why I think Neil Peart was the only drummer Rush could ever have had because I don't think anyone else could play those parts so personally and so reliably and it's precisely that predictability that seems to be important to both the band and it's fans.

Peart is definitely a one-of-a-kind player and even with his faults, he's still an awesome drummer.  Neil is done 1647293567

He has no faults.

Want to hear him in another band with a very different style?

Listen to the drums not the voice

Neil does a good job and I like him a lot both as a drummer and as a person.

But his playing just doesn't "pop" like this:

Apparently, Neil Peart is so great he's already been reincarnated 7 years ago before he's even yet died!  Shocked

And if you thought that was amazing... watch him play the unbelievably difficult "YYZ".  Shocked affraid Shocked
